Extra credit Literature Analysis #2

1.      In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies there are a group of kids that are stranded in an island. There is Ralph, the chief, Jack, the hunter, Piggy, the intelligent, Simon, the calm one, and the rest were the little uns and some other biguns. Throughout the novel, the characters face an amount of tragic event and along with that come conflict. The first tragic event that they face as a group of kids trying to survive is when they make a fire to signal for help. The fire managed to grow out of control and along comes the first victim, a little un with a birthmark. The kid with the birthmark was behind the idea of the bees. Then, they accidentally killed Simon thinking he was the beast. The day after Jack goes to steal Piggy’s glasses. Ralph and Piggy go claim Piggy's glasses but are surprised with Roger attempting to kill Ralph with a boulder. Ralph dodges the boulder but unfortunately Piggy is pushed off the cliff when the boulder got to him. That leaving the conch shattered. After Piggy’s death they try to kill Ralph again. Ralph runs and hides in a thicket. The next day, they force Ralph out of the thicket by setting it on fire. He is chased by Jack’s tribe when a naval officer spots the fire and gets closer because of curiosity. Thanks to the curiosity of the officer Ralph is seen and saved from the killing coming his way.
2.      The theme of the book is there is evil in people. The author chose this them to show people that other people can be mean.
3.      I chose the book because our class was reading it. It got my attention because of its name; I wandered why it was called like that.  What made me keep reading was how kids would survive in an island without authority.
4.      I found the book to be realistic because it shows how people can be evil.
5.      The author’s tone is expressed trough out the novel when the kids change and turn the whole island evil.
6.      Symbolism: the fire symbols hope. The conch symbols the intelligence in the island. The glasses symbol the way to make the fire for rescue.
Characterization
1.       Direct characterization: When the author describes Jack as an ugly kid. Also when the author tells us that Piggy is fat and has asthma
Indirect characterization: When I figured out that Simon is a calm kid because he loves flowers.
2.      The author change as the novel gets more interesting and so do the characters.
3.      The protagonist is dynamic and is round because at the begging of the novel he is all about rescue and at the end it is about surviving.
Enduring Memory
I would remember the part were Piggy died because they were very evil and it was just kids. Now I imagine what would happen, if there would be no authority. I think it would be chaos.

Literature Analysis #2

1.                  In Tom Birdseye’s book entitled Storm Mountain, the main characters are Cat and her cousin Ty. Ty comes over to visit her cousin Cat, with his dad’s ashes. Ty asks Cat if she would go with him to climb Storm Mountain. He also suggested that she should also take her dad’s ashes. Ty’s goal is to spread his dad’s ashes on top of Storm Mountain. Cat said that she won’t go with him. Ty replied saying he is leaving at 5 am. Ty wants to spread the ashes because that was the mountain that cat’s dad and his dad had died on. The next day cat wakes up and notices her dad’s ashes gone and also is Ty. She has to now go after him to regain her dad’s ashes. Through the adventure she goes to reach Ty she faces harsh blizzards and gets caught up with snow. They got stuck just how their fathers did. Finally in the end they climb it from the west side not the south side were their fathers died.
2.                  The theme is to not take what is not yours because there are consequences. The author chose to talk about this topic because he wants people to stop taking things that don’t belong to them. The consequences can be pretty huge.
3.                   At first I chose this book because it was short but then it was a pretty good book about how two kids climb a mountain and survive harsh things. I kept reading it because it was interesting because they are only thirteen.
4.                  I found some what the book to be realistic because I am two years older and the book has a realistic story not like some other stories. I did have connection with the book because when I was younger I made stupid mistakes.
5.                  The author’s tone is normal because it has the simple things that a book has.
6.                  The ashes are a symbol of love because it was their father before they died. “Dad’s still here” (Birdseye 10).  “You’re looking a lot like a deer in the headlights” (Birdseye 6). That is a figurative language that is a simile. “Ty was already prancing around like a horse in the starting gate” (Birdseye 129). That’s another simile. “The thwock-thwock-thwock of helicopter rotors…” (Birdseye 129). That is onomatopoeia. “… Reading, Where the Wild Things Are…” (Birdseye 116). This is allusion.
Characterization
1.       Direct characterization: The author doesn’t give direct characterization.
Indirect characterization: Ty is a funny kid. I know this because it is indirect when the author said, “What’s the matter, cat got your tongue?” (Birdseye 6). Cat is sneaky because, “Mom thinks I’m dunking with my friend Alex while she and Gene are gone” (Birdseye 7).
2.      The author talks about the characters the same way, but puts them in difficult position.
3.      The protagonist is Dynamic and is a round character because she changes from being mad at Ty, then changes at the end when they are both happy and not mad at each other.
Enduring Memory
The moment Ty decides to think on his own and takes Cat’s father’s ashes and to climb a mountain that he knew his dad had died on. It is important because he’s young and he doesn’t have experience of climbing mountains. Yet he climbs it and spreads the ashes.

Conformity

People who are different and have different things like tattoos and piercings are discouraged by society. In Logan Feys’s article, “The society of Leopard Man,” he states that, “society tends to discourage people from expressing their unique ideas and behaving in ways that are different from their peers.” I think that the author is correct; people discourage others that are different because they do it to get attention.
The author mentioned that, “the society tends to discourage people from expressing their unique ideas and behaving in ways that are different from their peers.” Feys means that society discourages people that are different because they only do it to get attention from others. They want to fit in with the rest of the people.
The author also mentioned how society discourages other people when he says, “society looks down upon freakish and extraordinary individuals alike and views them with suspicion.” What that means is that societies put down others that are different. They even call them freakish and view them with suspicion. People judge others without even knowing them. They do this because they are afraid of dealing with conformity.
Feys also states, “such people are desperate for society’s attention.” He means that they go over board to change their appearance and behavior to receive attention. He also states, “from time to time, get society out of your life and out of your mind.” He means that you can be different and at the same time fit in.
I do agree with Feys’s idea about how society puts down those that try to fit in. They are being conformed. So forget about society and be yourself. Let yourself be free but don’t unleash the freak within you.

Five Things You can do to Improve Cooking

1. Hold on to the knife properly. People who put their thumb next to their index on the side of the knife cut vegetables and thing better and faster. Also make sure that you have a good chef knife and to keep it sharp. The longer and wider the knife is the more speed, control, and confidence. When you master using the knife you will cut very fast and be able to control the knife.

2. Cook more. The more you cook the better you get. When you cook more your hand will get used to the gestures and become faster and better. Get used to the fire and everything like how it smells. Cooking is something you have to do over and over to get better at. Cook more and you can memories some recipes and create anywhere.

3.  Use accurate measurements. Make sure you have two sets of measuring cups. There are liquid measuring cups and dry measuring cups. You need to level off dry measurements and you can’t use the liquid measuring cups to level off. Make sure have the proper tools. When you measure make sure you get the right amount or the food might go wrong.

4. Boiling and Steam cooking. Boiling is a method that is to cook with water. People put their food in boiling water to get the tenderness of it.  Steaming is another method that is used to cook your food over boiling water were the steam of the boiling water cooks the the food and makes them crispy.

5. Cook different things and experiment. When you change your style and change the things that you cook it will help you make better dishes. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the food you can change the recipe and make it how you like it. And have fun cooking.

My Favorite Mistake

When I was in the 7th grade and it was Halloween my friends and I went out to scare people. We went by some people we tried to get them scared, but what really happened was that we were acting crazy and my friend tripped and made them laugh instead of being scared.
“Wow we told you to not mess up, but you did nice going” Juan said angrily.
“I’m sorry, I tripped over my shoe lace” Jose answered back.
“I’m just messing around that was really funny though” Juan stated
We kept going and we got to the corner were my friend had a beanie and told us to get what was in there. I put my hand and it was hard but breakable. Then I took it out and saw it was an egg. He had one for each of us.
“This is the first house so throw it Juan” Carlos told him.
“Why do I have to be the first one” Juan responded.
“Just do it.”
“Okay.”
Then he swung his hand with the egg and threw it to the door and we ran but nothing happened. We kept doing it till it was my turn, and as it was my turn I had to throw it and I did so they won’t get mad because they all did it and  didn’t. As I threw it someone shouted.
“Hey” someone shouted randomly.
That messed me up and I threw the egg all wrong and all you hear is “Clash!!!” We started to run and people came out and chased us and we ran to the school were we had to jump a fence.
“Hurry there coming closer” Jose shouted.
I jumped and my shirt got caught on it and fell backward and couldn’t get up, it was very painful I landed in my hip.
“Get up Lupe” I heard that and didn’t know who was that and I kept running and it was hurting bad.
I got home and just went to sleep and hoped it would be okay. The next day when I was tying my shoes, my back started to hurt.
“Are you okay?” my mom asked she knew there was something wrong so she dropped money and told me “Pick that up for me please I dropped by accident.”
I struggled and she said what wrong with me. I said nothing.
“If you don’t tell me you’re grounded.”
I ended up grounded and was just lying down in my bed for a week.

1.In Mocking Jay by Suzanne Collins. Katniss gets rescued by 13. After being rescued by District 13, Katniss is convinced to become the Mocking Jay, a symbol of the rebellion against the Capitol. But she demands that Peeta gets rescued. After that he gets rescued. Then they figured out that Peeta has been brainwashed into believing Katniss is the enemy

The Monkey's Paw

If you had three wishes, what would they be?  Why?  (No wishing for more wishes.)  Explain each response.
My first wish would be to be rich but to not cause any one to die. My second wish would be to strong and healthy. My third wish would be to live happily .
Is there anything that you are superstitious about?  Explain.  (If not, explain why not.)
I am superstitious about salt to be bad luck if you drop any. It is something my mom told me.
